(LAKELAND, Fla.) – The Thomas More College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of Mount Union today (Wednesday, March 7, 2018) in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida. Mount Union won game one, 4-3, and the nightcap, 3-2.
The Saints fall to 0-3 on the season and the Purple Raiders improve to 7-1.
In the first game, Mount Union took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Saints answered with a run in the third. Purple Raiders then plated one run in the fourth and Thomas More tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth, but Mount Union retook the lead at 3-2 in the sixth with a run. In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints tied the game at 3-3, but Mount Union scored a run in the top of the seventh to win the game 4-3.
Senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) suffered the loss on the mount as he pitched six and one-third innings and gave up four runs (all earned) on eight hits, while striking out one. Junior pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched two-thirds innings of relief and gave up two hits and struck out one.
First-year left fielder Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/LaSalle) led the Saints at the plate as he was two-for-three with a run scored. Junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was one-for-one with a home run, while junior shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was one-for-three with a triple and a run scored. Junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was one-for-three with a run batted-in and junior first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was one-for-three.
In the nightcap, Mount Union scored one in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead and the Saints cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth, not both teams would fail to score a run in the final three innings and Mount Union won the game 3-2.
Sophomore catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the team at the plate as he was two-for-three with a double and a RBI. Senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was one-for-four with a double. Boeckmann, Reynolds, junior designated hitter Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) each had a hit in the game.
Sophomore pitcher Griffin Smallwood (Lakeside Park, Ky./Dixie Heights) took the loss on the mound as he pitched five innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out seven. Senior pitcher Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Thomas More returns to the diamond tomorrow when it takes on Muhlenberg College at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
