(NEW CONCORD, Ohio) – The Thomas More College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Muskingum University today (Sunday, March 19, 2017) at Donna Newberry Field in New Concord, Ohio. Muskingum won game one, 5-4, and Thomas More won game two, 4-2.
With the split, Thomas More is now 8-4 and the Fighting Muskies are 3-11.
In the first game Muskingum scored four in the second and one in the fifth, while holding Thomas More to one in the first, two in the third and one in the seventh for the 5-4 win. Junior pitcher Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County (Ky.)) suffered the loss as she pitched six innings giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits, while striking out five.
Junior center fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) led the Saints at the plate as she was three-for-four with two doubles, a run scored and a run batted-in. First-year catcher Kenzie Dickerson (Union, Ky./Ryle), junior second baseman Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and sophomore third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands) each had a hit in the game.
In the nightcap Thomas More scored one in the first, two in the fourth and one in the sixth, while holding Muskingum to two runs in the seventh for the 4-2 victory. Sophomore pitcher Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) earned the win as she pitched seven innings giving up two runs (both earned) on three hits, while striking out four.
First-year Andrea Gahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led the team offensively, as she was three-for-four with a double and two runs scored. Sagers was two for-four with a run scored.
Thomas More returns to the diamond on Wednesday (March 22) when it hosts Wilmington College at 3 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
