Thomas More Sweeps Denison in Non-Conference Doubleheader

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College softball team swept Denison University in a non-conference doubleheader today (Thursday, April 20, 2017) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 8-0, in five innings and the nightcap, 10-9.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 26-8 and the Big Red fall to 23-11.

In the first game the Saints scored four in the first and four in the fifth and shutout Denison for the 8-0 "run-rule" victory.  Sophomore pitcher Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) earned the win in the circle as she pitched a 5.0 shutout innings and gave up only four hits, while striking out five.

Thomas More was led at the plate by first-year first baseman Andrea Gahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was two-for-two with a home run, two runs scored and five runs batted-in.  First-year catcher Kenzie Dickerson (Union, Ky./Ryle) was two-for-three with a double, a run scored and two RBI.

In the nightcap the Saints jumped out to a 5-0 run in the second inning and then Denison scored four in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth, while Thomas More added a run in the fifth and Denison led 9-6.  The Saints then rallied and scored three in the sixth to tie the game at 9-9.  In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, sophomore third baseman Whitney Quuillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands) hit a walk-off double scoring junior center fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) for the 10-9 victory.

Junior pitcher Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) earned the win as she pitched four and two-third innings and gave up four runs (all earned) on eight hits.  Sophomore pitcher Hannah Sprague (Bright, Ind./East Central) pitched two and a third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on eight hits and struck out two.

Finke finished the game three-for-five with three runs scored and Quillen was three-for-five with a double, a run scored and two RBI.  DeDreu was two-for-three with two RBI and junior second baseman Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI.

Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (April 22) when it travels to Washington, Pennsylvania to play Washington & Jefferson College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
