No. 4 Saints Defeat Grove City 2-0 for 30th-Straight PAC Shutout

By: B.J. Pheasant, Assistant Soccer Coach

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.)  The fourth-ranked Thomas More College women's soccer team posted its 30th-straight shutout against a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent today (Thursday, October 20, 2016) as it defeated Grove City College, 2-0, in a PAC match at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

The last time Thomas More gave up a goal to a PAC opponent was on November 2, 2013 when it defeated Grove City, 2-1.  With the win today the Saints improve to 15-0-1 overall and 6-0 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the PAC.

"With the weather today it was nice for us to play well," said TMC head coach Jeff Cummings. "We have a short turnaround for our next opponent and need to be ready. When we play up to our potential it is usually a good result for the team."

It was a wet and dreary day as the Saints looked to continue their march through the 2016 season schedule. Grove City pressed early and worked hard to disrupt the Saint's possession. Unfortunately, that pressing left gaps in behind for TMC to exploit. Thomas More had a 7-1 corner kick advantage in the game and a corner kick in the 20th minute was the game winning goal. Samantha Goodwin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) served in a corner and Taylor Robinson (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) powered it into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later in the 22nd Lauren Rose (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) took a throw in and placed it for Laura Felix (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) to split two Wolverine defenders, evade a third and drive ball into the box to intersect with a brilliant run from Erika LaRosa (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) for a 2-0 lead. Felix generated several more opportunities including a 35 yard driven shot requiring a finger tip save from the keeper at the crossbar.
In the second half the Saints pressed their advantage as shown by a 14-4 lead in shots on the game. A number of chances were turned away by the slimmest of margins as the deeper defending by the Wolverines paid dividends because they didn't leave gaps at the back. Megan Barton (Florence, Ky./Villa Madonna) earned her 13th shutout of the season with four saves.
The Saints next game is on the road at Geneva College at 4 p.m. on the 22nd of October (Saturday). The following week the Saints return home on Wednesday, Oct. 26th to face Bethany at 4 p.m. If you aren't able to make it out to the match live video and stats are available with links found on on the women's soccer Schedule page.
